Obituary for John F. Galvin Jr.

John F. Galvin, Jr. peacefully entered into eternal life on April 7, 2023. He was 82 years old.

Born and raised in Hoosick Falls, NY, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Sharkey) Galvin. He graduated from St. Mary’s Academy Class of 1958. Simply known by a childhood nickname, “Wheaties” he will be remembered for his keen intellect, quick wit, and unfailing sense of humor.

Following college studies, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. He married his wife, Margaret (Peg) McGuire, at St. John’s Church in North Bennington, VT and they were just shy of their 57th anniversary.

As a gifted and dedicated educator, he began his life’s work as a high school teacher at his alma mater. Later he joined the faculty at LaSalle Institute, Troy, NY until retirement. In 2006, Jack was deeply honored as the recipient of LaSallian Educator Of The Year award.

As a lifelong learner and perpetual student, his passion was history and literature. Wherever he was a book was close by. Proud of his Irish American heritage, Jack and Peg traveled extensively throughout Ireland. He was given the high privilege of serving as the Grand Marshal of the village’s Third Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, despite the freezing temperature of the Blizzard of 1993.

For many years, Jack was a fixture at the American House as the Friday night bartender. He was a fiercely loyal fan of the San Francisco Giants and New York Giants. He delighted in family celebrations and loved road trips to the ocean. As an involved member of local politics he served as a Democratic committee member for more than three decades. He was a lifelong parishioner of Immaculate Conception, and

longtime member of the Derby Community Club and St. Stanislaw Society.

Jack’s life was full of blessings, his most treasured was family. He embraced the role of “Dad” and later “Boppa Jack/Grampy” with a full heart. His smile never shined brighter than when in the company of “the boys”.

Family will hold Jack’s memory close in their hearts and cherish his well lived life. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Peg) and sons, Brendan and his wife Kristin (May), Brian and his wife Nicole (Cross), adored grandsons Jack, Brendan, Tommy, Ryan and Declan, dear sister Mary (Rich) Marriner as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by brothers Patrick, Michael and Lawrence.

With deepest appreciation, the family would like to thank all of the compassionate caregivers who Jack encountered throughout his journey.
