Obituary for Joan Reopel (Burns)

Joan(Burns)Reopel passed away peacefully March 28,2023 . She was 92. Joan had been residing with her son,Toby and daughter in law Cheryl Reopel, under the care of Hospice, and previously at the Danforth Adult Care Center in Hoosick Falls, NY. We would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at the Danforth Center for the great care Joan received while living at the center.  

Born in North Adams, MA. on August 31, 1930, to the late John and Eileen(Bailey)Burns, the last of four children; her siblings John Jr, Shirley Barry, and Marge Cutler predeceased her.  

Joan married the love of her life, Albert “Hoppy” Reopel on September 9, 1955. They moved from North Adams, MA to Hoosick Falls, NY and raised four children. Craig (Caryn) Reopell, Barbara (Steve) Marchand, Patricia (Jonathan) Kilroy and Albert “Toby”(Cheryl) Reopel who survive her. She is also survived by her much loved nieces and nephews.  

“Hop” passed March 7, 1997 in Myrtle Beach, SC.  

Joan was “Nana” to Kristin Reopell, Michael Reopell, and Margaret Reopell, Renee(Marchand)(John) Moor, Lindsey(Marchand)(DeCarlo) Brown, Keegan(Laura)Marchand, David Kilroy, Daniel Kilroy, Jack Reopel and Charles Reopel.  

“Nana” had also been blessed with 5 great grandchildren. Shea, Liv, Paige and Jade Moor, and Gwendolyn Brown. Joan graduated from St Joseph's high school in North Adams and went into nursing school at St Margaret’s in Albany, NY. She had a lot of relatives in Hoosick Falls and visited frequently in her teens and there met a lot of friends, with friendships lasting a lifetime. After Joan and Hop made Hoosick Falls their home, Joan worked at the Country Club in Vermont and while raising their children, Joan worked at the Hoosick Falls Central School, in the cafeteria, for years. 

Joan and Hop moved to Myrtle Beach, SC for Hop to retire and made their home there for 35 years. Joan, being a people person, made a lot of new friends working at Akel’s restaurant and at The Carolina Opry Theater for over 25 years.  

In her later years, Joan moved from Myrtle Beach, to Shaker Heights, OH with Patty and her family and was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church.  

Joan was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church,in Hoosick Falls, and St. Andrew Catholic church in Myrtle Beach.  

Per Joan’s request, there will be no visiting hours but a mass of Christian Burial. Arrangements have been made through Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St. Hoosick Falls, NY. Interment will be private.
