Obituary for Jean Rosemary Florio

Jean Rosemary Florio, 92, passed away on February 28th at her daughter's residence in Orchard Park where Jean had resided. She formerly resided in Hoosick Falls, NY and was the wife of the late Joseph (Buddy) Florio who passed on December 16, 2016.

Jean was born on January 3, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Andrea and Giovanna (Viscardi) Anzalone. She and her family moved to Long Island when Jean was in high school, where she met her future husband Joseph. On Long Island, she and her husband owned a florist shop until moving upstate to Hoosick Falls, NY.

She worked as the Activities Director of the former Hoosick Falls Health Center for over twenty years before retirement. Jean and Buddy took in foster children beginning on Long Island and helped raise over fifty children over the years. They were the 4-H leaders of the Rensselaer Rough Riders Club for many years and put on numerous horse shows at the former Reddens Grove across from HFCS.

Jean was an active volunteer in other ways over the years, serving as a swim instructor, a PTA member, and in later years she volunteered at the Immaculate Conception Church, where she was a member, decorating for holidays, working at the food pantry in town, at the Bennington Museum, and as a Gray Lady at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Survivors include her children William Florio (JoAnn Rogers) of The Villages, FL, Lisa Florio Girardi (Mark) of Orchard Park, NY, Laura Zangel (Michael) of Shushan, NY, grandchildren Faea Jehle, MJ Girardi, Matthew Girardi, Rion Zangel, Zachary Zangel, also three great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday March 5th, at 11:00 am, from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY. Burial will follow the mass at St. Mary's Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 am until the start of the mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY., who are handling the arrangements.
