Obituary for Frederick E. Kain

Kain, E. Frederick
Age, 89, passed away at the Danforth Adult Care Center, Hoosick Falls, NY on November 27, 2021, two weeks shy of his 90th birthday. Fred came from humble beginnings, the firstborn to German immigrant parents in the midst of the Great Depression. From a young age, he worked alongside his father, who was a carpenter and mason. Fred was an intelligent and industrious young man. After graduating from his father's early hands-on education he furthered his education earning a degree in civil engineering from Duke University. He returned home to Lakeview, NY, where he married his high school sweetheart, the former Ann Brandis, who predeceased him in 2009. Ann and Fred's four children were all
born in Pittsburgh, PA, where he worked for ten years at US Steel. The basis was laid there for the family to become lifelong enthusiastic Pirates and Steelers fans. The family moved to Elmira, NY, which was home for the next 50+ years. During that time, Fred worked and ultimately retired from Corning Glassworks. Fred loved
everyone. He was a man of God who instilled that faith in his children. He was a devoted member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Elmira, NY for over 50 years serving as a Sunday school teacher, lector, council and choir member He was kind, caring, empathetic, generous, optimistic, and egalitarian. He only ever asked that he be remembered as a "good guy." He was all that and so much more. He encouraged all of his children to follow their passions and pursue their individual God-given talents. He and Ann had an abundant love for their grandchildren and tried to give each of them their own special time with Grandpa and Grandma. They especially loved the holidays and the many special get-togethers to celebrate Oktoberfest or the annual "planting party," emphasis on party, always with a cookout and plenty of beer and bocce on the side. He also loved the family's annual tradition of tailgating at a Cornell Big Red football game. We all loved him and he will be sorely missed. Fred is survived by his children and their families: Peter (Nathena), Kain of Norwich, NY, David (Wendy) of Seneca Falls, NY, Tim (Doris) of Kennebunk, ME, and Sue (John) Hyde of Hoosick Falls, NY. Grandchildren include Patrick, Emily, Lydia, Christopher (Sarah), and Elizabeth Kain, Molly (Nick) and Heather Hyde, and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Grayson and Emmitt.
