Obituary for Dorothy Baker

Dorothy Marion (Andrew) Baker passed on Monday, June 28, 2021, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, where she had been a resident for the last three years. She was born June 15, 1919, in White Creek, NY, to Charles G. and Grace (White) Andrew.

She graduated from Walter A. Wood Memorial High School in Hoosick Falls class of 1936, where she was a member of the orchestra playing the piano.

Dorothy was predeceased by four brothers: Edwin, Harold, George and Frances Andrew. She married her high school sweetheart, Clyde R. Baker on December 29, 1939 and they were happily married for over sixty-six years. He predeceased her in April 2006.

She was a loving and dedicated stay-at-home mom and farmer's wife working hard both inside her home and outside. Family was always most important to her. Dorothy was a Godly woman and faithfully read her Bible daily and was a firm believer in the power of prayer.

She was a member of the West Hoosick Baptist Church for over eighty years and for most of those years a faithful and active member. For fourteen years she was organist and choir director. She served on the Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees, was Sunday School teacher and superintendent, was the expert oyster stew maker for the church's annual oyster supper. She also served in other capacities when needed.

Her family gave her a birthday party when she was “100” years old which she greatly enjoyed. Knowing what an important part music was in her life some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren surprised her with a music recital on various instruments.

Dorothy loved African violets and had several gracing her home and enjoyed starting new plants from cuttings of her full-grown plants. She was a quilter and made quilts for each of her ten grandchildren. In her later years when she became physically limited in what she could do she was often reading or doing puzzles. She especially liked the challenge of doing Bent & Wiggly word searches. She had a gift for writing notes and cards and an uplifting hand written message and continued to do this throughout her life. She was blessed with a sharp mind even in her later years.

She is survived by her four children; Beverly Cottrell and husband Steven of Ipswich, MA, Allen Baker and wife Mary Jane of West Hoosick, NY, Jane Lang and husband Bob of Cambridge, NY, Norman Baker and wife Cynthia of Norway, ME. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday July 3rd, at 12:30 pm, from the West Hoosick Baptist Church on County Route 103 (West Hoosick/Buskirk Road). Burial will follow the service at the West Hoosick Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 11:00 am until the start of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Hoosick Baptist Church, as per Dorothy's request. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY.
