Obituary for Joan M. Gardner

Joan M. Gardner, 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 9th, at the Albany Medical Center. She was the wife of the late George “Bobby” Gardner, for fifty-two years, he passed in 2012.

Joan was born on June 2, 1942, in Troy, New York, daughter of the late Howard and Ida (Wescott) Zablocky. Mom met our dad at 16 years old. Twelve days after they met he asked for her hand in marriage. She remained married to the love of her life for 52 years, until death parted them in 2012.

Mom enjoyed baking and she did a lot of it for her large family. We all remember her whoopie pies, Italian spaghetti and mincemeat cookies. Mom could make a meal when it seemed like the cupboards were bare. Christmas was her favorite holiday and the treats were plentiful then.

Mom always enjoyed reading and throughout her lifetime the trips to the library were frequent. She imparted that love of reading to her children. Mom always seemed to know what we were doing. We were convinced that she had eyes in the back of her head. It was difficult to watch so many of us that closely though. Later, in our lives we enjoyed telling her stories of the things we got away with. She was not amused!

Mom regretted quitting school in her senior year. She earned her diploma in 1985 while her youngest children were still in high school. She was the oldest child in her family and she cherished her brothers as if they were her first born. She remained close to them all of to the end. She would often reminisce about her friendship with Audrey Bartus. They met as little girls and continued a life long friendship. Mom's cat Ginger was her constant companion through the last difficult few months..

We have lost a rare and gentle soul. She wanted everyone to be kind, never wish ill on others and never use the lord's name in vain. We will carry these lessons as we move on without her. The lord has chosen to end her suffering. For those of us that remain, we will take comfort in her final words,”Love You All” mom will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her children, Denise Morse, Deneen (Bruce) Hansen, Dreama Maleady (Eric Case), David (Diane) Gardner, Donald (Cassandra) Gardner and Douglas Gardner, twin brothers, James (Eleanor) and John Yerdon, Robert (Judy) Yerdon and Arley Yerdon, also several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by a brother Rodney Yerdon.

The funeral arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Relatives and friends are invited to the graveside service on Friday, February 12th , at 12:30 pm, in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Hoosick Falls, NY.
