As a child/young adult I thought of Iva as my “second mother.” She was one of my mom’s best friends. As an adult, Iva was one of my aunt’s best friends and a special friend to me.
Iva would greet you with a warm smile and a story or memory to share. She had a heart of gold, she was willing to help everyone in any way she could.
I have so many wonderful memories of times with Iva that span my entire life: Memorial Day picnics, special homemade Halloween treats, watching White Christmas each December (a tradition I still continue), camping weekends in the Adirondacks, traveling/camping vacations to places like West Virginia and Pennsylvania, trips to Bennington on hot summer nights to get cold ice cream treats, HFCS basketball games (even in the snow), shopping trips, yummy spaghetti sauce, soft chewy delicious sugar cookies, the list could go on and on… and my Iva favorite – spice cake!
Iva was not just a friend to many and an accomplished cook and baker. She was also a very talented quilter and knitter. She enjoyed keeping busy with her hands. In fact, when I last talked to her she told me she had already knitted about a dozen pairs of mittens to be included in boxes for the needy at Christmas time – a legacy.
The quilts Iva made for both Bob and I upon our graduation from high school were both used until they were faded and threadbare – made with love and special care. Forty-one years ago she made and decorated our wedding cake – her extraordinary gift, this too, made with love and great care.
Iva was also a true Christian who volunteered her service to others in many ways. Her life should serve as an example for all of us to follow. In her younger days, she led many church events. She and my mom were co-chairs of the church bazaar for many years. She served on many church committees and in her later years she was a dedicated volunteer for HACA at the food pantry.
Iva will always hold a special place in my heart, I will miss her greatly – a very special lady, a wonderful friend.
