Obituary for Michael Otero

Michael Otero of Greenwich,NY, passed away Sunday July 15 at his home after a short but courageous battle with cancer with his wife Karen by his side. Mike was born in Barre Vermont and grew up living half the year in Hialeah Florida and the other half in Pownal, Vermont. Mike attended Mount Anthony Union High School. After school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam Era. After the Navy he worked with his father Louis, at his Little Blondie Stables training race horses. He then began working for the New York Racing Association as Security Guard at Belmont and Acqueduct race tracks, eventually as a permanent rank of Sargent at the Saratoga Race Course for over 25 years. He then was hired by the Gerald B Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville as a Cemetery Caretaker. He retired from there in 2017. He met his wife Karen (Hall) in 1989 and they were married in January 2000. They made their home in Greenwich.

He and Karen enjoyed their time together traveling, most recently to Colorado and Hawaii. They enjoyed their Sunday rides and picnics and traveling up and down the east coast, with their favorite places being Key West and Myrtle Beach. Mike also enjoyed cooking, landscaping, the stock market and news programs. He and Karen enjoyed the Sunday NFL package during the football season, with Mikes favorite team being the Buffalo Bills, unfortunately. He was especially proud of his service to his country and his Cuban Heritage. Mike was most famous for his delicious Pic-A-Dil, a Cuban meat dish.

Mike is predeceased by his Father and mother, Louis and Lois Otero and sister Aileen. He is survived by his wife, Karen, his children Mike, Mark (Lindsay) and Daughter Marie (Wendy), Brothers Tom (Linda), Willie John (Stacey) and David (Zane) and his sister Mary Ann (Lawrence Cole), 4 grandchildren, several nieces nephews and cousins and two aunts.

A Memorial service for Michael will be held on July 24 at 11:00 AM, from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls New York. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home 10:00 Am till the start of the service. The burial will follow the service at the Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans or the Second Stride, a non for profit organization for retired thoroughbred race horses through the funeral home.
