Obituary for Kathleen Rita O’Neil

Kathleen Rita O’Neil, also know as Aunt Katy, Kathy and Miss Oatmeal,
entered God’s Kingdom, October 27th, 2015, at the Hoosick Falls
Center for Living and Rehabilitation after a courageous battle with
cancer. Kathleen was born on February 3, 1932, the youngest child of
Anna (Bogardus) O’Neil and James Henry O’Neil of Hoosick Falls, New
York.

Kathleen spent her childhood in Hoosick Falls and graduated from St.
Mary’s Academy. She felt called by God to religious life and entered
the Sisters of St. Joseph of Corondolet as Sister Margaret Anne. After
earning a degree in elementary education from the College of St. Rose
in Albany, New York, Kathleen became a teacher and served many
communities throughout the state; including Amsterdam, New Hartford,
Fort Edward, St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls and St. Jude’s in
Wynantskill. The majority of her career was spent at St. Augustine’s
School in Troy, New York and she retired from School Number Two in the
Troy City School District after 44 years as a dedicated educator.

Kathleen lived joyfully, with a strong love for music, Irish heritage,
traveling with friends and family, and the Boston Red Sox. She was
known for her beautiful singing voice that she shared at many
weddings, funerals, and family gatherings. Kathleen was involved in
many community organizations such as the Ancient Order of the
Hibernians, the Boy’s Club, the Sister of St.Joseph of Corondolet
Associates, charter membership of the Waterford Columbiettes,and the
Canonaire singing group of Watervliet

Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Francis (Chuck)
O’Neil, Margaret O’Neil Keegan, Mary O’Neil Sutherland, Anne O’Neil
Greenwood, and James O’Neil.; nephews George Sutherland, James
Sutherland and Ron Greenwood. She is survived by nieces, Joan
(Keegan) DeRosa, Mary (Sutherland) Snyder, Kathleen (Greenwood)
Hauser, Margaret (O’Neil) Hansen, Marie O’Neil-Ferrannini, Donna
(O’Neil) Hopkins, Mary (Keegan) Schmigel, and a nephew, James Keegan.
She will be missed by them as well as the rest of her family and the
multitude of friends gained over a long and happy life.

Funeral services will be Saturday October 31 at 10:00 am from the Mahar
Funeral Home 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am
from the church of the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow the
mass at St. Mary's Cemetery Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday October 30
from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters
of St. Joseph of Corondolet through the funeral home.
